Chapter 22

‘So, tell me everything, Matilda. Did you find anything?’ Georgina asked as they headed to the omnibus at the end of the tour and their volunteering efforts for the day. Georgina was not aware of what had happened, and Matilda did not wish to speak of it in detail.

But she had forgotten about their clandestine search with Elijah in the drama that had followed.

‘Find?’ she asked, confused.

‘Yes, with your brother, in Meredith’s sewing room?’ Georgina asked, now a little bewildered by Matilda’s response.

‘Forgive me, I was in a slight incident in the garden, and I am a little rattled.’

‘No! Are you okay? Should we sit for a moment?’ Georgina asked. Matilda could feel her dear friend studying her.

‘Thank you, but no. It was a male patient in the garden with me, Hannah and Kirra. He had wandered away from his work party, but fortunately nothing came of it.’

‘Goodness,’ Georgina said, her hand going to her heart. ‘I am sure I would have struck out in fear.’

‘That’s what I want to do,’ Matilda agreed. ‘I don’t want to be vulnerable. I must learn to protect myself.’

‘Let us learn together,’ Georgina concluded as they exited the gates of the asylum. ‘Although I do have height on my side.’

Matilda calmed herself, thinking back on how Georgina distracted Dr O’Shea and assisted herself and Elijah. ‘How did you know what we were up to?’ she asked with a smile.

Georgina tapped her nose. ‘I sense these things. I always have. My father says I am quite intuitive – I know when calving is about to begin before the cow does sometimes,’ she said and laughed at her own joke. ‘But in all seriousness, as Meredith is your brother’s patient, I assumed he would want to get to the bottom of the mystery of what made her want to jump. She’d been medicated, I imagine.’

‘I don’t know, but Elijah said he prescribed nothing that would bring on that kind of reaction.’ Matilda lowered her voice, glanced around to ensure they could not be overhead and said, ‘We found a drug bottle in her sewing kit.’

‘No!’

‘True. Elijah will need to determine what was in it, and who gave it to her.’

Georgina shook her head. ‘Dreadful. Thank God we were spared the sight of that lovely woman falling.’

‘We must keep it to ourselves though… my finding.’

‘Absolutely!’ Georgina declared. ‘Who is to say who might be involved and we don’t want to put anyone in danger.’

They hailed the omnibus as it drew closer.

‘It’s rather exciting, isn’t it?’ Georgina added, tucking her drawing pad under her arm as the ladies lifted their skirts slightly to step up on the rail.

Matilda grinned. ‘I do love a good mystery.’

Once seated, Matilda smiled at Georgina and touched her arm. ‘I think someone is a little charmed by you.’

Georgina scoffed. ‘Oh, he always acts like that. I assure you Dr O’Shea thinks of me as a friend and nothing more. I think he might have had intentions once, but I’ve never reciprocated his feelings.
